Neighborhood Sounds
Neighborhood Sounds is an ongoing socially engaged art project that explores the urban environment of Portland through the lens of sound. In collaboration with artist Sarah Luu, we are recording sounds from various neighborhoods across the city to better understand the unique auditory landscapes that shape each area. The project involves collecting diverse sonic material—from street noise and conversations to natural sounds—and using these recordings to create a detailed sound map of Portland. Ultimately, the project will culminate in the production of neighborhood albums, offering an immersive and multi-sensory perspective on the city’s communities. Through this work, we aim to highlight the significance of sound in shaping our perception of place and foster a deeper connection to the city’s environment.
